Canon has revealed its most affordable RF-mount camera to date, with the APS-C format Canon EOS R100 designed to be an easy-to-use family camera. In essence, it’s best seen as a simpler version of the Canon EOS R50, at a lower price. Major specifications are pretty unremarkable, being essentially borrowed wholesale from the 2-year-old EOS M50 Mark II (itself a minor refresh of the original EOS M50 from 2018).

The camera employs a 24MP AP-C sensor that offers an ISO range of 100-12,800, expandable to ISO 25,600. It can shoot at 3.5 frames per second with continuous AF, or 6.5 fps with focus fixed. The autofocus area covers 88% of the frame, with face and eye detection available. But the EOS R100 lacks the sophisticated subject detection included in other recent Canon cameras, including the EOS R50, as it uses the older Digic 8 processor.

Video features look somewhat outdated, with 4K recording available at 25 fps, but only with a significant 1.55x crop. The camera also only offers contrast-detection AF in 4K mode, not the much superior dual pixel AF. Full HD recording is available at up to 120fps, using the full width of the frame and with DPAF, while vertical video is supported for social media. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in for smartphone connectivity via Canon’s Camera Connect app.

The EOS R100 uses the same small 2.36m-dot, 0.59x viewfinder as the R50, but makes do with a fixed 3in, 1.04m-dot rear screen that’s not even touch sensitive.  It has a slightly simplified control layout with no ISO button, and employs a standard 5-pin hot shoe rather than Canon’s more recent multi-interface shoe.

In its favour, the body is particularly compact and lightweight, with similar dimensions to the R50 (approx. 116 x 86 x 69mm) but weighing even less, at 356g. The Canon EOS R100 will cost £669.99 in a kit with the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
