Tamron is a prolific third-party lens manufacturer providing affordable alternatives to costly native lenses. Their latest addition, the updated Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD, has now been announced for Canon RF and Nikon Z mirrorless cameras, priced at £549.99/€649.99.

Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD at a glance:

  • 17-70mm f2/8 constant aperture lens
  • VC image stabilisation
  • RXD autofocus system
  • 19cm minimum focusing distance
  • 67mm filter thread
  • Lens mount: Canon RF, Nikon Z

This fast aperture, f/2.8 lens has a very versatile focal length range of 17-70mm. Note that this translates to 25.5-105mm on a Nikon Z APS-C camera and 27.2-112mm on a Canon RF APS-C. Ideal for capturing wide-angle scenes, portraits, and even minute details thanks to its 19cm close-focus distance at the wide-angle end.

It features Tamron’s VR (Vibration Compensation) stabilisation and RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) motor, which help capture steady handheld stills and video and provide silent focusing.

Built around 16 lens elements in 12 groups with an optical design that reduces focus breathing. It has a moisture-resistant band, and a fluorine-coated front element makes it more resistant to water, oil, and dust.

Tamron's 17-70mm F/2.8 lens is coming to Canon RF & Nikon Z in July 2026, featuring VC stabilization, RXD autofocus, and a competitive price

Weighing 530g for the Canon and 540g for the Nikon version, it is not exactly lightweight – especially compared to its native Nikon equivalent, the Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm F2.8, which weighs only 330g – but it’s still a reasonably compact lens that wouldn’t be too heavy to carry around.

The Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD will be available from the beginning of July 2026 in Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts in the UK and Ireland for £549.99/€649.99. You can also purchase the Fujifilm X and Sony E-mount versions.
