One of the more surprising news stories in recent months has been how Kodak branded point and shoot cameras have been hitting the top ten sales charts in Japan.
AP recently reported how marketplace app Minna Camera had the Kodak Pixpro Z55 and C1 at numbers six and eight among the most popular new condition cameras sold, with these pocket-money snappers holding their own against the higher priced Fuji X100VI, various Ricoh GR compact camera variants plus the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III.
It’s far less surprising news, then, that there are further new Kodak Pixpro cameras hitting the marketplace soon.
Professional hits?
The most potentially interesting of two newly unveiled models looks to be the stylish black and silver liveried Kodak Pixpro C10, its model name denoting the inclusion of a retractable 10x optical zoom equivalent to 25-250mm f/3.6-6.7 in 35mm terms.
Though details are a little sketchy, the attractive looking compact features a shooting mode dial appearing to offer film simulation modes that, if visible abbreviations are taken at face value, potentially reference Kodak Ektachrome, Kodachrome and Kodacolor film, (as well as Black and white); in a similar way to how Fuji has long offered film simulation modes ape-ing the likes of Velvia, Provia and Astia in its own cameras.
A pop-up flash and zoom lever also feature on the C10’s top plate, while to one side is a vacant USB port, likely to enable charging of an internal battery.
The second new Kodak landing this autumn via licence holder JK Imaging is the boxy looking waterproof Kodak Pixpro P1, which also sports a classic silver and black styling, as well as an alternative option in a white and baby blue colour. While the fact that it claims to be liquid-resistant to depths of 16ft or five metres is interesting, and the camera otherwise features a bog-standard backplate control layout that will be familiar to any snapshot user, including a zoom toggle switch and red video record button, the forthcoming P1 camera further features a flip up back screen LCD that can be lifted to face whatever is in front of the lens for those inevitable selfies.
These two digital Kodaks arrive hot on the heels of the recently announced Kodak EC35 retro film compact from a fellow licensee of the brand also behind another viral hit in the Kodak Charmera and recent Millennium model.
Given all the Kodak branded activity of late, it’s almost enough to make us forget the original Eastman Kodak company filed for bankruptcy back in 2012. News via DCW.
