Tiny cameras in everyday objects, used for security or even spying, are nothing new. The former East German state security force, the Stasi, put cameras inside watering cans, wallets, and even the toilet next to the boss’s office.
This is the first time we’ve heard of a tiny camera being put inside a walnut however. This nuts project was dreamed up by US uber-nerd Penguin DIY, a man who appears to have almost supernatural skills with a small drill and a soldering iron, as well as the dexterity of a tiny-piccolo player.
Plus a fondness for aviator shades and Miami Vice interior decor, but we won’t hold that against him.

Anyway you can watch the YouTube video below to see how Mr Penguin manages to squeeze an impressive amount of electronics inside a (carved out) walnut shell, including:
- Neodymium magnets
- An array of Li-Polymer batteries
- A mini battery level indicator
- Type-C USB port for battery charging
- An FPV (first person view) camera, similar to those from a drone, we assume.
This could be a great project to try in the dead time between Christmas and new year, when many people have nuts lying around the house (but enough about my relations).
Even if you have no intention of putting a tiny camera inside seasonal snacks, the video is surprisingly relaxing to watch – a bit like TV chefs cooking some amazing feast while you heat up a ready meal in the microwave…
