Billie Rae Cawte

This week we have selected a series of photographs by Billie Rae Cawte, using a Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

“I’m a photographer and photographic technician from Portsmouth. I truly fell in love with my Huawei Mate 20 Pro last year during the first lockdown onwards. Like most people the time was really difficult and found myself wanting to use my love of photography to help find a bit of normality during the unusual times.

I didn’t feel comfortable taking my camera out during the allowed exercise time so I would just go for a walk, listen to music and take photos using my smart phone. I was drawn to what I would normally photograph but it felt different, things were missing, and the series Pandemic Pink just grew.

After each walk I would edit with Adobe Lightroom Mobile using a preset to mimic infrared film, after all what a perfect ‘look’ for an uncanny yet familiar scene. Being able to shoot, edit and finally upload online to share with others on one device kept me shooting, and is why I somehow ended up with over 100 images.

Pandemic Pink ended up becoming my first self-published zine. The photographs printed beautifully up to A3 and people are still surprised they were captured on a phone. I really appreciated the convenience of having a good camera in my pocket at all times and its meant I’ve photographed a lot more too. Smart phones have allowed many more people to become involved in photography and its wonderful to see how we differently capture the world.”
