Samsung announced its latest Galaxy A27 device today with some pared-back updates. The Galaxy A-series is home to Samsung’s best budget smartphones. It includes five categories, numbered 5, 3, 2, 1 and 0, followed by the latest iteration number. The A27 presents a modest update over its predecessor; despite sprucing up some design features and performance, it keeps much of the existing camera tech on board.

Samsung Galaxy A27 at a glance:

  • 50MP main camera, OIS
  • 5MP ultra-wide camera
  • 2MP macro camera
  • 12MP selfie camera
  • 5000mAh battery, 25W fast charging
  • 6.7 inch AMOLED screen 120Hz

There’s a large 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, but instead of the chunky notch on the top of your screen, it sports a hole punch design for the front camera, maximising the available screen, while keeping a sleek 7.8mm profile.

Samsung claims the A27 delivers a flagship-level experience to the budget series, thanks to upgrades, like the new Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, which offers a 10-20% speed boost over the A26.

When it comes to cameras, we don’t get an upgrade, though. There’s a 50MP main shooter that will be your general go-to in almost any scenario. There’s a 12MP front camera (down from the previous 13MP) and a 2MP macro camera inherited from the A26, which can be a nice-to-have for close-ups, even if it doesn’t deliver world-shaking resolution. But the decision to clip megapixels from the previous 8MP ultra-wide camera, leaving us with only 5MP, is disheartening.

On the plus side, if you do opt for the A26, Samsung offers 6 years of Android OS and security updates. It is available in the UK from 3 July for  £319 for the 128GB version, and £379 for the 256GB version. It will hit US shelves on 14 July, priced at $350.
