With the latest F8 Ultra and F8 Pro, POCO enters the premium flagship category. A young, independent brand born out of Xiaomi, POCO was introduced in 2018 to the global phone market and has secured a firm position by delivering a varied feature set without the hefty price tag.
To enter the flagship realm, the new F8 series has undergone a major overhaul in terms of cameras and design. Both devices received a telephoto unit – a first for the POCO line-up. The F8 Ultra shows off a triple 50MP set-up at the rear with a periscope telephoto unit and a 32MP friont camera with an automatic wide-angle mode for group selfies. While the F8 Pro has a 50MP main and a 50MP telephoto camera and inherits the 8MP ultra-wide and 20MP selfie unit from the previous POCO F7 Pro.
The Ultra’s main 50MP camera is said to deliver a wider dynamic range and therefore better low light performance with its larger 1/1.31″ sensor, supporting your night portraits and sunset shots. There’s a special multi-coating that is said to reduce ghosting and flare. The new 50MP periscope telephoto camera boasts ISO, 5x optical zoom, and 20x “lossless” digital zoom and a 30cm minimum focus distance for close-ups.
Design-wise, the new look seems somewhat familiar, with camera isles reminiscent of the latest iPhone 17 Pro. Both devices are equipped with POCO’s HyperRGB AMOLED display that delivers 3500nits peak brightness, the Ultra being the larger device at 6.9″ protected by a new POCO Shield Glass while the Pro is more pocket friendly at 6.59″ protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. And for audiophiles there’s a new high-fidelity sound system on board too, designed by Bose.
