NEWS UPDATE 3.30pm [adds comment from Argos]
With much talk these days of cheaper online stores killing off high-street shops, a glaring example has arisen of where a so-called ‘price match promise’ would certainly not do anyone any favours.
The apparent whopping cost of the Canon ET-65B lens hood – £4,747 – was spotted by a somewhat shocked Amateur Photographer (AP) reader.
Terence Moore said he reported the high pricetag to two Argos stores in Essex.
But he noticed that the figure quoted on the Argos website remained unchanged several days later.
The same money would pay for two Canon EOS 5D Mark III professional DSLRs at Park Cameras, for example.
While, the Canon ET-65B lens hood is on sale for just £33 at Bristol Cameras (see below).
The Canon lens hood is designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens and ruining photos.
‘In addition, as the end of the lens is extended, you also get some extra protection from accidental impact,’ explains the Argos website, which adds that prices are ‘correct as displayed but are subject to change’.
Argos says delivery is free.
The lens hood is compatible with the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS lens.
An Argos spokesman told AP: ‘Due to a genuine human error, the Canon ET-65B Lens Hood was incorrectly priced on our website and should have been priced at £47.
‘We are in the process of resolving this. No customers have been affected, and we apologise for any confusion this may have caused.’
