Announced on Digital Transitions, the new A-series from Phase One is described as a ‘new system using Phase One Digital Backs, Rodenstock optics, and ALPA bodies.’
Though details are thin on the ground, it appears that the range comprises three models – the A250, A260 and A280. The A250 features a CMOS sensor, the others feature CCD sensors.
Unusually for medium format, the cameras are mirrorless and therefore do not feature an optical viewfinder.
Instead pictures are viewed either on the Live View screen or via a smartphone, which it appears can be mounted on top.
According to Digital Transitions, a hands-on preview of the A-series will soon be available, for which you can request access at their site.
There is no word on pricing yet, but given the respective costs of Phase One digital backs and Alpa bodies, the new system is unlikely to come cheap.
Phase One is yet to issue a formal release on these new cameras, and has not yet responded to AP’s request for comment.
