Entrants are required to take a ‘visually appealing picture that tells a science story’, according to the Royal Photographic Society, which organises the free-to-enter contest.
The Gold Award winner will bag £1,000, Silver £750 and Bronze £500.
‘We want as many people as possible to enter this competition – school or college students, scientists, photojournalists, artists – everyone!’ said RPS coordinator Gary Evans.
Last year’s entries included the mould on a strawberry, and a bursting bubble.
‘Entrants can have fancy equipment or use a smartphone, it doesn’t matter,’ Evans added.
‘The important point is to capture your view of science in a way that tells a story to the average person.’
There are separate categories for entrants aged 18-25, and those aged 17 and under.
The closing date for the Siemens-backed competition is 1 May 2016.
