Japanese-born photography student Yoshi Kono has won the Ilford Photo Student of the Year competition ? a contest designed to boost interest in the b&w genre.
Kono beat fellow finalists Stuart Matthews and Torquil Bennett to claim the title and the top prize of a Mamiya 711 camera
He also bagged £350 in cash and £250 worth of Ilford photo materials.
The theme of the competition was to accurately reflect the ?innate beauty? of b&w photography.
?The standard of work was so high and incorporated so many different attitudes that the judging panel really had to attempt to explore the photographer’s psyche in order to gauge which best interpreted the theme of the competition,? said Ilford Photo marketing director Howard Hopwood.
He added: ?In the end it was decided that the raw edge displayed by Yoshi Kono?s street photography just took it that degree further.?
As part of their prize the three finalists went on photo assignments with professional photographers.
Kono is a student at Westminster Adult Education College in London which was awarded £500 in Ilford materials as part of the overall prize.
