Replacing the EOS 1100D, the EOS 1200D is an 18-million-pixel APS-C-sensor size model with a Digic 4 image processor.
It will cost around £350 body only and is due to go on sale in March.
To coincide with the launch, Canon has announced an online ‘companion app’ to guide users on how to use the camera and give them photography technique tips, via their mobile device.
The ‘learn, explore and inspire’ app – primarily designed for photography newcomers – is compatible with Android operating systems from today and Apple iOS in two weeks.
AP asked why Canon did not make such internet-based tutorial information available in-camera, through an Android operating system, for example.
Neale Conroy from Canon UK’s DSLR management team responded by saying that, to avoid sacrificing image quality, this would have required a second ‘dedicated’ processor that would have made the camera too expensive.
Features include an ISO range of 100-12,800, Full HD video, a nine-point AF system and three frames per second shooting.
Its larger 3in LCD screen carries a resolution of 460,000 pixels, and Canon has introduced its ‘creative filters’ –used on higher-end models – into this entry-point camera.

- Canon has also revamped its 10-year-old Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX to release a new version featuring LED modelling lamps to help improve low-light focusing, plus the ability to trigger the unit from a DSLR menu. Improvements also include 12 new custom functions. The Macro Ring Lite MR-14 EX II will go on sale in April priced £599.99.
