People tie up a huge amount of their identity in the vehicle that they drive. Whether a beat up old banger or the latest shiny sports car, when we get behind the wheel, we project a bit of ourselves into the world.

This is the overriding idea behind the Homo Mobilis project by the photographer Martin Roemers. For the work, Martin travelled the world with a large white backdrop, a camera, and a question – “would you pose with your vehicle for me?”

The finished result is an astonishing collection of images which raise a number of questions, both on a small scale and more pressing global matters.

For example, “what about the environmental impact of our addiction to oil and engines?” but also “does your choice of vehicle express something about your identity?”

Beyond all that, the images simply are wonderful to look at, all but guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

I am particularly taken with the behind-the-scenes images, which show how a project like this was carried out. It’s clearly one with a huge amount of ambition and scale, and getting a glimpse into how it was done is really quite remarkable.

Now, what do you think your car says about you?
