AP’s deputy art editor chooses her favourite reader image from the past two week’s uploads to our Reader Gallery.
I thought I’d go with something topical this week to kickstart the year, so I’ve picked this image – ‘The Last Sunset’ – by Mark Hooper. He tells us his picture depicts ‘the last time the sun set in 2013 – in Liddington at least’, and for me it’s an excellent visual metaphor for the passing of the old and birth of the new.
The vibrant colours and simple graphic composition really caught my eye. However, I think what makes the image is the silhouetted figure on the hillside with the path leading our eye in as the sun lies low in the sky. The combination gives both a sense of departure and of moving forward, but there’s also a slight feeling of uncertainty, or possibility. After all, who knows what lies over the crest of the hill?
So, well done Mark for winning the first AP Reader Gallery Picture of the Week of 2014.
