Sitting just below the EOS 60D DSLR, the EOS 650D is billed as an ‘entry-level’ model.
Canon UK has confirmed that the EOS 650D will cost £699.99 body only and go on sale on 15 June.
Continuous AF in live view is made possible by AF sensors built into parts of the new 18-million-pixel APS-C-size hybrid CMOS.
Phase-detection AF is activated when live view is used, before contrast-detection AF comes into play to refine focusing, according to reports.
This should help speed up AF performance when using live view or shooting video.
The EOS 650D will come equipped with a 3in (1.04-million-dot-resolution) vari-angle touchscreen that enables zooming when reviewing images.
The touchscreen can also be used to set focusing and fire the shutter.
The continuous shooting rate has been boosted from 3.7fps on the EOS 600D, to 5fps on the EOS 650D.
And equivalent ISO sensitivity can be expanded to a maximum of 25,600.
All AF points on the nine-point AF system are cross-type.
Other improvements include the addition of Canon’s Digic 5 image processing engine, and two more creative filter effects: art bold and water painting; plus two new scene functions: handheld nightscene and HDR backlight control which take a series of shots in a bid to deliver a single, correctly exposed, more balanced, image.
