Hosted by Wilkinson Cameras, the monthly competition is organised in the run-up to the retailer’s Digital Splash photography show in October.
Captured by photographer David Smith, the image came top in the July round, which carried the theme ‘The Great Outdoors’.
David, from Ashford in Kent, won £50 worth of Wilkinson Cameras vouchers and goes forward to the Digital Splash Photographer of the Year finals, the winner of which will be announced at Digital Splash in Preston, Lancashire, on Sunday 11 October.
Judge Baxter Bradford said: ‘The control of beautiful light throughout the scene tipped the scales in its favour.
‘There is a wide range of textures contained in a strong composition. It is not just the wet, glistening rocks of the breakwater, but the placement of distant cliffs, horizon and the three enigmatic silhouetted figures all act coherently.’
He added: ‘Yes, there has had to be some post-production work to bring out details in shadows and the white railings of the steps, but I feel this is done sympathetically and not apparent until the viewer thinks about how the light is falling on the scene.’
Digital Splash, which takes place at the University of Central Lancashire, is free to attend and will include talks by ocean photographer Jonathan Chritchley and portrait photographer Damien Lovegrove (tickets for seminars cost £6).
