According to Mashable, the selfie-related death toll has grown to 12 so far this year, compared with eight deaths caused by sharks.
In July, police in Russia launched a campaign urging people to take safer selfies after a spate of accidents.
Among them was a woman who was left in a serious condition after shooting herself in the head while taking a selfie.
According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the 21-year-old had been taking a selfie while holding the gun to her temple.
It is understood that she accidentally pulled the trigger.
