Greek photographer Aris Messinis, who works for French news agency AFP, won the honour for pictures he captured during the battle for Sirte in October 2011, a few days before the death of the Libyan dictator.
Messinis, 35 – who is reportedly self-taught – has been AFP’s chief photographer in Greece since 2006.
The Bayeux-Calvados Awards for War Correspondents were set up in 1994.
