Photographer Mark Heathcote, an amateur who had never had his work exhibited before, came top at the London Photo Festival with his shot called ‘Spotted on the Underground’.

Commenting on the winning photo, judge Colin O’Brien said: ‘The image shows a lonely figure sitting on what seems to be an empty underground carriage.

‘What makes the picture is the juxtaposition of a red circular notice on the carriage window that completely covers the person’s face – making them look like some alien travelling around the Circle Line.’

Open to amateurs and semi-professional photographers, the festival aims to showcase up-and-coming photographers, give them a chance to have their work professionally appraised, and to sell it to the public.

Samantha Edgely and Francesco Marchetti won second and third place respectively, both with black and white images.
