The contest sought photos in areas such as food, farming, bioenergy and health.
The ‘Images with Impact’ competition was run by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
The public can choose category winners and runners-up from the shortlisted entries, by voting online.
An overall winner will be decided by visitors to the Great British Bioscience Festival, to be held in London on 14-16 November.
Online voting closes on 31 October.
