Polaroid is set to re-launch some of its most famous instant film cameras, according to Impossible B.V, the Netherlands firm that plans to make Polaroid-camera compatible instant films.
Polaroid licensee, The Summit Global Group, made the announcement at a press conference in Hong Kong, states a message posted on the Impossible Project website.
The move has since been confirmed by Polaroid.
In a statement Polaroid UK confirmed this afternoon: ‘Polaroid will once again manufacture a range of classic instant film products like the Polaroid ‘600’ instant film, and also bring a range of instant cameras to use them, including the easy to use Polaroid One.’
Amateur Photographer understands that a ‘third party’ will make the cameras on Polaroid’s behalf.
Asked where the cameras will be made, a Polaroid UK spokesman told Amateur Photographer: ‘Summit Global will produce the cameras through a third party manufacturing partner, which at the moment is undisclosed due to commercial confidentiality.’
Last year Polaroid announced plans to axe production of its iconic emulsion, blaming the digital photography revolution.
Meanwhile, Impossible B.V has been commissioned to develop and produce a ‘limited edition’ of ‘Polaroid-branded’ instant films in the ‘middle of 2010’.
These will be in addition to The Impossible Project’s own brand of instant film, production of which is due to begin early next year.
Earlier today we reported that a new black & white film designed to be used in traditional Polaroid cameras is a step closer to becoming a commercial reality after crucial lab tests proved successful.
The Impossible Project is also due to launch its own range of instant ‘colour’ film, details of which have yet to be announced.
