The competition is part of the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards, which is sponsored by Nikon.

The deadline is 14 November and winners will be announced on 5 February 2015 at an awards ceremony in London.

Entry to the Citizen Photographer of the Year is free.

Images must have been captured between 17 July 2013 and 16 July 2014, and can be on any subject.

Entrants must live in the UK.

Professionals will compete for the title of Nikon British Press Photographer of the Year.

Nikon UK’s group marketing manager Jeremy Gilbert said: ‘We get to see amazing press photography in the media every day but it is not often that we get the opportunity to appreciate the work and celebrate the photographers behind the iconic images.

‘These photographers really are at the heart of the image and shape our perception of today’s news, in one of the most competitive media environments in the world.’

Professional categories include Nikon Videographer of the Year; Fixation Young Photographer of the Year; Getty Royal Photographer of the Year; Bloomberg Business Photographer of the Year; News Photographer of the Year; and BT Sports Photographer of the Year.

The judging panel will be chaired by Jane Sherwood, picture editor of the Sunday Express.
