David Bowie was ‘lovely, down-to-earth Englishman’, says photographer he once had picnic with

Bowie, who died earlier this week aged 69, is among star subjects of a new photography exhibition which opened at King’s Cross Station in London yesterday.

O’Regan was official photographer to Bowie in the 1980s.

Commenting on the picnic, O’Regan told Amateur Photographer: ‘The picnic in Australia came about because a week earlier, in Japan, David had been very annoyed that I’d missed a shot of him being mobbed.

‘To make up for it, he not only arranged the picnic, but hired a car to drive us there himself!’

The photographer added: ‘He was a lovely, down-to-earth, Englishman.’

The exhibition at King’s Cross, called ‘Rock Through the Ages’, showcases O’Regan’s images of international music legends on and off stage, captured over a 40-year career.

His famous subjects have also included Spandau Ballet, Pink Floyd, Queen, Duran Duran, Thin Lizzy and the Rolling Stones.

The exhibition – organised in a tie-up with Network Rail – first went on display at Manchester Piccadilly station last September, before touring the UK.
