Professional Camera of the Year and Product of the Year – Canon EOS R5 Mark II
£4999 l canon.co.uk
Why we like it:
- Excellent handling and control layout
- Superb subject detection AF
- Great image quality in both JPEG and raw
- Eye Control Focus
In a year that saw the release of a lot of high-end cameras, one stood out. Canon’s EOS R5 Mark II is a highly capable professional all-rounder that can handle almost any task, for either photography or video. It sports a 45MP sensor, can shoot at up to 30 frames per second, and record 8K video at 60fps.
Like its more sports-focused sibling, the EOS R1, the EOS R5 Mark II is based around a concept that Canon calls ‘Accelerated Capture’. This means it combines a stacked, backside-illuminated sensor with a DIGIC X processor that’s boosted by a new DIGIC Accelerator processor. This brings new autofocus features, faster video shooting, and generally more responsive operation.

Major AF updates include a new ‘Action Priority’ mode for certain sports, which uses ball tracking to work out and focus on whichever player is active at any given time. You can also register faces for the camera to prioritise. But the star of the show is Eye Control Focus, which gives a uniquely quick
and intuitive way of selecting your desired subject in fast-paced situations.
Naturally Canon hasn’t overlooked video. The camera is capable of internal 8K 60fps RAW recording, 4K at 120fps, or Full HD at 240fps.
A built-in heat-dissipation pathway prevents overheating during recording.

What’s more, the EOS R5 Mark II handles superbly and is responsive in operation. There’s a vast array of buttons and dials on board, so all the key shooting settings can easily be changed with the camera up to your eye. Canon has done a particularly good job of making its advanced autofocus capabilities accessible in a photographer-friendly way.
Crucially, you get consistently excellent images. Metering, white balance, and image stabilisation all work consistently and reliably. As the icing on the cake, the camera works seamlessly with adapted EF-mount SLR lenses, too.

Top of the class
Ultimately, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II fixes the main flaws of its predecessor while adding unique technology that its competitors can’t match. It boasts a class-leading specification, even in this rarefied sector of high-speed, high-res flagships, and it’s very difficult to think of anything that counts as a significant flaw. If you need a top-spec all-rounder that can do everything, this is it. It’s a worthy winner of our Product of the Year award.
