Forum competition results for the October 2013 round – The Old and the New

We
are surrounded by the present and the past. Everywhere we look, the world as it
is now and the world as it was function together in harmony. The past and
present are in everything, from the natural world to the architecture that
surrounds us in our towns and cities.




The
winner of the Forum monthly photo competition will receive a National
Geographic Earth Explorer NG2346 Midi Messenger Bag. It’s an everyday,
functional shoulder bag that holds all your personal gear along with a
tablet, camera or camcorder and associated accessories worth £79.95
provided by Manfrotto. Runners-up will each receive an ‘Amateur Photographer Loves My Pictures’ mug.

For
this round, we asked you to show us old and new in one image. The subjects
could be of anything you wanted and it’s good to see so many variations on the
theme. Of note the shot ‘Reflecting on the merits of progress…’ by Engineer6
– an image that addresses the conflict between analogue and digital, surely a
concept many of us on here are familiar with. I also like mike_morley’s
‘Getting a Helping Hand’. It was a good decision to convert the image to black
& white. It really brings out the detail on the elder subject’s hand and
emphasises the maturity that contrast’s with the smooth skin of the infant. Now
for the top three.

3rd Place
Rustyknight – Ribbit!


Rustyknight’s
shot of a frog with its spawn was a shot that I noticed right away. The key
ingredient of a successful wildlife image is to ensure that the eyes are
pin-sharp. It’s a great way of creating a level of engagement with the viewer.
And just look at those incredible eyes! Why would you not want to see them in
great detail? Of course, Rustyknight’s image fits the theme perfectly – a
parent with its newly developing young. It’s a great wildlife image and a more
than worthy top-three entry.








2nd Place
Skiddawman – Zaragoaz, Reflections in the Old and New




Skiddawman
is a regular forum competition entrant and this shot is typical of his ability
to produce a unique take on the theme. We saw other shots that contrasted
architecture from differing times, but here Skiddawman has brought the old and
the new crashing together by capturing the reflections in the glass. It’s a
very clever shot.








1st Place
Helander – Quercus Folium




Helander’s
shot is very good indeed. It’s an image that took me by surprise, mainly
because it’s one that I would never have thought to look for when considering
this month’s theme. The bright green leaves contrast perfectly against the
brown of their aged fallen companions. The light is a very beautiful and the
rushing water really adds to intoxicating atmosphere. This shot is a real
stunner.
