Due out in May priced £999.99, the 80D features a new 24.2-million-pixel CMOS imaging sensor and borrows several features from higher-end Canon models.
For example, it has a flicker-detection function that was first used in the EOS 7D Mark II and an AF system similar to the one deployed by the EOS-1D Mark IV.
The 80D uses a 45-point AF system (all cross type), 27 of which are f/8 compatible and designed to enable AF to be sensitive down to -3EV. This enables images to be captured in moonlight, according to Canon.

‘Previously, we only saw this kind of AF system on our 1-series,’ said Canon UK product intelligence consultant David Parry in an interview with AP (see video above).
‘The 80D sits right in the middle of our line-up, so it’s a great camera for people stepping up from something like a 600D or 100D who are looking to take their photography further.’
Parry claimed that the image quality delivered by the 24MP imaging sensor should also make it ideal for landscape and portrait photography.
A larger pentaprism aims to give 100% viewfinder coverage, while the ability to shoot seven frames per second for 110 JPEGs and 25 raw files should make it suitable for sports, wildlife and action photography. This compares to 65 JPEGs and 16 raw files on the 70D, which the 80D replaces.
Touted improvements to the grip include a deeper thumb grip on the back, to make it more comfortable and secure and handle.
The 80D offers a top ISO of 25,600, a redesigned mirror box and enhanced features for videographers, including Dual Pixel CMOS AF to boost focusing speed and provide greater control, and a headphone jack.
Nano USM
To coincide with the launch of the EOS 80D, Canon has unwrapped a new 18-135mm lens – the first to feature Nano USM drive-system technology capable of delivering ‘smooth, quiet AF for movies and blistering speeds for stills’.
Nano USM aims to combine the quietness and smoothness of a Stepping Motor system (STM) with the speed of the Ultrasonic Motor system (USM).
Canon has also unveiled a Power Zoom Adapter, to enable greater control when shooting movies and the ability to control it remotely over Wi-Fi, via the Canon Camera Connect app.
The lens and adapter are both due out in May, priced £439.99 and £129.99 respectively.
