This week, the Sony World Photography Awards will announce its winners in a gala ceremony held in London.
Among these winners will be one of the above images (click to view them full-screen), each of which is a category winner from the Sony World Photography Awards Open Competition, which is designed for amateur photographers.
The category winners, who were revealed at the end of March, hail from around the world, from the UK to Malaysia. Each of them has already received a Sony Alpha 7 II camera for getting this far, and whichever one is crowned the overall winner can expect an impressive grand prize of $5,000 (though it’s not quite as much as the winner of the prestigious Professional Photographer of the Year, who can expect to take home the $25,000 L’Iris d’Or prize).
The images are set to go on display at an exhibition at London’s Somerset House, which will open the day after the gala ceremony and run until 10 May.
New to the awards this year was the Mobile category, which also announced its winners at the end of March. The winning image by Turi Calafoto wasn’t popular with everyone – take a look at judge for yourself.
So which of the Open images is your pick to win? And, more importantly, do you think you could do better? Because if you think so, there’s no reason not to start preparing to enter the next round of the competition, which we’re expecting to open for business later this year.
