The Wiki Loves Monuments competition is built around the purpose of providing photographic resources of sites of cultural significance for future generations to use.
Anyone can join in the competition to improve the Monuments map by uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons this month. The full list of eligible subjects is here.
As Wikimedia Commons is an open resource of publicly available images, be aware that you will have to be willing to have your entry available in the public domain.
The 2013 edition of the competition saw more than 368,000 entries from 53 countries. Despite this, there are still many listed sites yet to have a photo submitted.
Last year’s winner was David Gubler, with an image of a locomotive with a push-pull train crossing the Wiesener Viadut over the Landwasser River in Graubunden, Switzerland (above).
The competition runs throughout the month of September. Prizes include a trip to Wikimania in Mexico City. For a guide on how to enter, see the Wiki Loves Monuments website.
