Leica has updated its M-mount wideangle prime for its M-series rangefinder cameras, with the new Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH gaining a few useful updates compared to the existing optic. The new appears to use exactly the same 9-element, 6-group optical design, but can now focus as close as 40cm rather than 70cm before. This extended range isn’t coupled to the camera’s rangefinder, though, so needs to be used in live view.

The lens now employs an integrated circular hood, which the firm says can be retracted or extended with a simple hand movement. This update goes hand-in-hand with a revised cosmetic design.

The Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 is due to be available from 30th November 2023 for £4,400 – a significant hike over the current version’s £4,070 price tag.

The Next Generation of the Powerful and Versatile Wide-Angle Lens

26th October 2023. Leica Camera’s experience and expertise in the development of optical precision tools goes back more than 150 years. Since then, iconic cameras and lenses have been handmade by Leica experts and rank among the best in the world. Leica products continue to maintain this high level of manufacture through innovation, the passion to rethink the existing without compromise and to keep redefining the limits of what is technically feasible. This expertise now culminates in the next generation of the Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH., an update to the M-Lens portfolio offering a state-of-the-art, versatile wide-angle lens.

The new powerful high-speed M-Lens presents itself with improved technical features which equip the Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. with the latest sensor technology, ensuring ideal compatibility for current and future camera generations. The closest focusing range still works via the range finder of all digital and analogue M-Cameras up to 70 centimetres, but extending the range has ensured all photographic needs are met with the latest technology. After a slightly perceptible resistance, the extended close-up range between 70 and 40 centimetres can be precisely focused via Live-View on the screen, with the Visoflex 2 viewfinder or with the Leica FOTOS app.

To ensure compact dimensions like other M-Lenses, the new Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. is also improved with ergonomics and integration. The lens hood has been manufactured in a modern, round design, directly integrated in the lens, making it especially easy to use. With this new addition, it can now be screwed in or unscrewed with a simple hand movement. Internally, 9 lenses in 6 groups enable images to be taken that are extremely rich in contrast and detail. The focus ring can also be adjusted in a remarkably quiet and smooth way to ensure reactivity and precision when shooting subjects.

The Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. will be available globally at all Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorised dealers starting 30th November 2023. The retail price will be £4, 400 including VAT.
