Samyang introduces AF 12mm F2 E for Sony APS-C cameras

Samyang has introduced the AF 12mm F2 E, its first autofocus lens designed specifically for Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras. With an angle of view equivalent to an 18mm lens on full-frame, it’s based on the firm’s well-regarded manual focus 12mm f/2 design, but gains tweaked optics and weather-sealed construction. As a result, it’s said to be even better suited to astrophotography, with Samyang’s MTF curves predicting reduced astigmatism that means stars should be rendered closer to perfect points towards the corners of the image. It should also be a good choice for subjects such as landscapes and architecture.

The lens comes in Sony E-mount only, and is for use on APS-C cameras

Like the existing lens, the 12-element, 10-group design incorporates two aspheric and three ED glass elements to minimise chromatic aberration and distortion. Samyang also says that it’s applied improved Ultra Multi Coating (UMC), which promises higher contrast and reduced flare. Autofocus is driven by a linear stepping motor, with the minimum focus distance a being mere 19cm.

A petal-shaped lens hood is included to protect the front element and reduce flare

Samyang has managed to make the lens slightly smaller and lighter than its manual focus sibling, at 59.2mm in length, 70mm in diameter, and just 213g in weight. This comes despite it using an all-metal housing. It accepts 62mm filters and comes with a petal-type lens hood. Due to go on sale in early May, the Samyang AF 12mm F2 E will cost £359.99.
