Photographs of a man accused of the attempted murder of a photographer in a remote African village, have been released.
Kypros Kyprianou, who grew up in England, claims he was attacked by men wielding machetes while travelling around Mozambique taking photographs for a new book.
The photographer today released images of one of the suspects. He said that he took the pictures following an arrest made by local police in Mueda.
Kyprianou, 45, captured the photos on a Samsung GX-20 digital SLR camera that he won last year in a competition organised by UK magazine Amateur Photographer.
As we reported on Tuesday, Kyprianou – who is travelling alone and living in his Land Rover – said men tried to kill him as he took a break in the vehicle on Sunday night.
He suffered a number of cuts to his body during the incident but said he was not badly hurt.
In a frantic call to the newsdesk of Amateur Photographer, the photographer said on Tuesday: ‘Bandits attacked me and hit me with their machetes. I have cuts all over me.’
‘It was attempted murder,’ claimed the former businessman who now lives in Greece.
Speaking today, he said that one of the attackers hacked at him through a smashed window while holding on to a roof rack as he tried to escape the assault.
‘I drove the Land Rover into bushes and shrubs at high speed and finally braked sharply, throwing the attacker into the air,’ he added.
Last year Kyprianou visited the London offices of Amateur Photographer to show staff his photographs before embarking on a project to photograph ‘remote areas of Africa’.
In 2008 he won camera equipment in the magazine’s Amateur Photographer of the Year (APOY) competition.
At the time of writing Amateur Photographer had not been able to independently verify details of the incident.
The magazine has alerted the Greek Embassy in Mozambique.
The photographer first contacted the magazine from a local radio station on Tuesday.
