A photograph by Man Ray last night sold for three times its presale estimate, signalling the continued market resilience for top quality photos, say auctioneers.
Man Ray?s Untitled (Photomontage with Nude and Studio Lamp), captured in 1933, bowed out for $410,500 (£251,070) at Sotheby?s in New York.
It was sold to an unnamed private collector.
Meanwhile, four artists notched up record prices for their work at auction, including Jaromir Funke. One of the artist?s pictures sold for $350,500, easily beating its $50,000-70,000 estimate.
?Our total [raised] of $5.6m, well over our high estimate of $4.3m, shows the strength and resilience of the market for important photographs,? said Chris Mahoney, Senior Specialist at Sotheby?s Photographs Department.
