Leica Camera Group sales shot up 73% in nine months, boosted by strong demand for Leica M and S-system cameras, according to preliminary figures released by the German company.

Sales rose to ?186.4 million for the nine months to 31 December 2010, compared to ?107.6m for the same period in 2009.

Earnings before interest and taxes increased to Euros 28.9m for the quarter to 31 December 2010, from a loss of 0.3m a year earlier.

Leica said that group sales of ?75.5m for the last three months of 2010 were the company?s best quarterly results since 1996.

A spokesman said the figures exceeded expectations. ‘The crucial factor is the continuing strong demand for the Leica M-system, the professional S-system, compact cameras and Leica sport optics products.’
