Leica has unveiled a limited-edition rangefinder camera whose design is based on the first Leica MP that was launched in 1956.
Produced in collaboration with the Leica Historical Society of America (LHSA), the Leica MP3 LHSA Special Edition is claimed to ?combine the classic design of the early Leica MP with the precision and durability of the current model of Leica MP?. It is built to carry the same spec as the current MP model and includes functions such as TTL metering.
Destined to be a collectable classic, the MP3 LHSA Special Edition is designed to more closely resemble the original 1956 MP than the current production MP, a model which was launched in 2003, explained a UK spokesperson.
Out in a silver-chrome or black-paint finish, 1,000 units have been released worldwide but it is thought that fewer than 20 units will reach UK shores because most are likely to be snapped up by LHSA members.
The presentation box includes a matching Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens and a Leicavit MP, which is designed for fast winding on of film, in a kit priced £5,598.
The Leica MP3 LHSA Special Edition features a viewfinder magnification of 0.72x and is equipped with bright-line frames for 35mm, 50mm and 90mm lenses.
The Leicavit MP is a mechanical accessory that attaches to the camera.
