Amateur Photographer’s Festival of Photography is taking place at the University of Greenwich in London on January 31st, and it promises to be another stimulating and enjoying day for photographers of all levels.

While there is a broad church of speakers at the festival, there is a particular emphasis on documentary and portrait photography, and making photography and videography a career (or at the very least, a useful and satisfying revenue stream).

Tickets are selling fast, and our special Black Friday ticket discount ends today, so don’t miss out – you can book your tickets here.

We mentioned earlier how attendees will get some useful career advice at the festival, and few photographers are better placed to offer this than Dr Denise Maxwell.

A talented all-round photographer, mentor and educator, Denise is an expert at starting and running a successful photography business, so she will be sharing lots of advice and insights.

‘I am always applying for opportunities, exhibitions, practising, networking, keeping busy on social media and living photography – people need to be constantly reminded about what you do,’ she notes. ‘The main skills the photography business owner needs are adaptability, to understand the different hats you need to wear, and be able to grow into these roles or contract them out – editing, or social media marketing, for instance.’

See more quick tips below but to really benefit from Denise’s expertise, you need to come and hear her speak at the festival. A naturally outgoing and warm-hearted person, Denise is ready to answer your questions, too.

  • Without a portfolio and easily accessible examples of your work, it’s hard to compete.
  • There are opportunities everywhere, especially with exhibiting. These can bring recognition, possibly a fee, and generate further commissions.
  • To work out what you need to live, and help set pricing, split your target salary by 48 weeks (assuming you take some time off), then split this between how many days per week you want to work.

Save on tickets with our Black Friday deal – but hurry, it ends today!

Other must-hear speakers at our Festival of Photography include celebrity portrait shooter Harry Borden, lifestyle and music photographer Dean Chalkley, innovative portrait photographer Drew Gardner, film photographer and social media star Miles Myerscough-Harris, fashion ace Amanda Akokhia and many more.
