Canon has revealed the new Canon EOS R6 V, a ‘video-first hybrid’ model that’s designed for creators and vloggers. As its name suggests, it’s built around the same core hardware as the photo-focused EOS R6 Mark III, and therefore the EOS C50 cinema camera, too. But it’s aimed at people who primarily shoot video, with a focus on ease-of-use, particularly when working hand-held.
What this means it that the EOS R6 V employs a 32.5MP full-frame sensor that offers resolutions up to 7K and 60fps. With a built-in fan for active cooling, the firm claims it can record continuously for over 2 hours without overheating. It also offers Open Gate shooting, allowing footage to be cropped to either vertical or horizontal formats after shooting. Live streaming is available, too, at up to 4K 60p, via either the full-size HDMI port or USB-C.
As this is fundamentally a video camera, it employs a box-shaped body with neither a mechanical shutter nor a viewfinder. Composition is via the fully articulated 3-inch, 1.62m-dot touchscreen or an add-on monitor. Unlike the similar-looking EOS C50, though, in-body image stabilisation is built-in for hand-held shooting, promising 7.5 stops of shake reduction.
If you want to use the EOS R6 V for stills, it has similar specs to the EOS R6 Mark II, meaning it can shoot 32.5MP raw files at up to 40 frames per second.
Size-wise, the camera measures 141.8 x 83.3 x 79.7mm and weighs 688g including the memory card and LP-E6P battery. Its dust and moisture-resistant body includes tripod sockets for both horizontal and vertical shooting. There are 12 user-assignable custom buttons, plus a zoom controller around the record button for use with power zoom lenses.
A multi-function shoe on top accepts audio accessories, and Canon is promising that support for external flash units will come with a future firmware update.
The Canon EOS R6 V is set to go on sale towards the end of June, for £2399 body-only, or £3549.99 in a kit with the new RF 20-50mm F4 zoom.
Matched Canon RF 20-50mm F4L IS USM PZ standard zoom
To go with the EOS R6 V, Canon has also revealed a matched zoom lens optimised for ‘hybrid creators’, the Canon RF 20-50mm F4L IS USM PZ. It employs an internal power zoom design, which means it can be controlled from the camera, while the overall balance doesn’t change during zooming. There’s an electronic zoom ring on the lens, too.
Canon has adopted a 13-element, 11-group optical design, including 2 glass-moulded aspherical elements and 3 Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) glass elements to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness while supressing chromatic aberration. The firm’s Super Spectra and Air Sphere coatings are employed to minimise flare and ghosting.
Autofocus is driven by a Nano USM, while built-in optical stabilisation is rated for 6 stops on its own, or 8 stops when used on a camera with in-body stabilisation.
As part of Canon’s premium L-series line-up, the lens boasts weather-sealed construction. It employs 67mm filters, measures 79.9 in diameter by 98.4mm in length, and weighs in at 420g. It’s set to cost £1439.99 when it goes on sale at the end of June.
