Boasting a ‘revolution in resolution’, the cameras are a response to customers demanding ‘high levels of detail’, according to Canon.
They are primarily aimed at landscape, architecture, fashion and portraiture, and carry an ISO that is expandable to ISO 50-12,800.
Canon says that, using a 1.6x crop, for example, the cameras produce a 19-million-pixel-resolution image.
Contained in what is essentially a Canon EOS 5D Mark III body, the EOS 5DS and 5DS R each house dual Digic 6 image processors and deliver a claimed 5fps burst rate.
The 5DS R is the same as the 5DS but includes a low-pass cancellation filter. Canon UK product intelligence consultant David Parry explained that the EOS 5DS R actually contains two low-pass filters, one of which cancels out the other.
Taking out one would have meant altering the focal plane of the camera and redesigning it, he added.
The 5DS R will cost £3,199.99 – £200 more than the 5DS, which will go on sale priced £2,999.99, body only.
The cameras are not expected to go on sale in the UK until June. Features on both cameras include a 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points, and a 3.2in Clear View II LCD screen.
They each deploy Canon’s Mirror Vibration Control to help reduce blur. The EOS 5DS and 5DS R are among four DSLRs revealed by Canon today – more DSLRs than Canon has ever announced in one day.
The EOS family now boasts 15 models. In 2007, there were just four.
• Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens The cameras were announced alongside the new Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM, a ‘super-wide’ lens aimed at landscape and architecture work. This is due out in March, priced £2,799.99.
