British Journal of Photography and JCDecaux UK announce the Portrait of Britain Vol. 8 competition winners and nationwide exhibition. From 12th January, high streets, rail stations, London bus shelters, an airport and shopping centres across the UK will transform into a national art gallery.
Portrait of Britain Vol. 8 – the British Journal of Photography award presented in partnership with JCDecaux UK – brings 100 winning portraits to digital Out-of-Home screens nationwide, selected from the 200 shortlisted images, all of which appear in the photobook published by Bluecoat Press and sponsored by WePresent, the arts platform of WeTransfer.

Launched in 2016, Portrait of Britain launched as a way to bring together the many faces that comprise modern Britain. This year’s winning portraits reaffirm the award’s commitment to public space, public attention and public storytelling. The Vol. 8 collection highlights that the most compelling stories of Britain emerge from the extraordinary variety of people who inhabit it. The winning portraits include veterans, scientists, fishmongers, ballerinas, and farmers. Stories of lives lived from Glastonbury to Glencoe, Royal Festival Hall to Barras Market. The portraits encompass those born here; those who arrived as children and those who are passing through.
This year’s panel of judges included Sophie Parker (Photo London, Director), Dennis Morris (Photographer), Claire Rees (Photography Director, BAFTA), Mick Moore (CEO & Creative Director, British Journal of Photography), Rajvi Kantaria (Director of Marketing, JCDecaux UK), Vivienne Gamble (Director, Stills Centre for Photography | Founder and Co-Director, Peckham 24 | Photography Curator) and more.
Below are just some of the winners, see here for more. Keep a look out in your local areas for the photographs and let us know which ones are your favourites via social media or emailing your thoughts to [email protected]
