Nikon is to add a third f/1.4 wide aperture lens to its optical line-up in less than a year when it introduces the new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G moderate wideangle this November. Said to be a completely new optical design, this fast aperture lens will boost Nikon?s low light performance initiative, in line with the company?s concentration on reducing image noise in high ISO settings in D series SLRs. Nikon claims the Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G will have ?amazing contrast and resolution?, and, with a nine bladed iris, will produce ?super smooth bokeh?. Using a single aspherical element and the company?s Nano Crystal Coatings, Nikon hopes to reduce flare and the sagittal coma-type aberrations that wide aperture lenses can suffer from. A Silent Wave Motor is used to maintain quiet focusing, while magnesium alloy barrel parts provide strength without adding excessively to the weight of the already-600g lens. Designed for both DX and FX systems, the 35mm focal length will deliver the impression of a 52mm lens when used in front of APS-C sensors.

Priced a whopping £1699.99, the AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G is due to arrive in stores in mid November.
