McCurry, best known for his famous National Geographic cover ‘Afghan Girl’, has previously received such accolades as the Robert Capa Gold Medal and the National Press Photographers Award, as well as being a four-time recipient of first prize awards from World Press Photo.
The Society’s Progress Medal was awarded to Tim Webber for his Oscar-winning visual effects work in the film Gravity, which included the invention of the ‘Light Box’ LED cube used to mimic specific lighting effects.
Terence Pepper, former Curator of Photogrpahs for the National Portrait Gallery, was presented with the Outstanding Service to Photography award
A number of photographers also received Honorary Fellowships, including Magnum Photos member Chris Steele-Perkins and John Swannell, a photographer known for his Royal portraits.

The Awards, which have been running since 1878, were held this evening at the Royal Society, London.
