Michael (pictured above and below) set up the popular US photography website in 1999 with friend Chris Sanderson, devoting the site to the art, craft and technology of photography.
Paying tribute to Michael on the Luminous-Landscape website, colleague Kevin Raber said his friend died on 18 May after a battle with cancer.
Kevin, who is the website’s publisher and CEO, said he travelled with Michael to many corners of the world. ‘His passion for photography was matched only by his love of sharing that passion with readers around the world,’ Kevin wrote.
Many photo enthusiasts have turned to Facebook to express their sadness at the news.
Among them was Jeff Frenske, who wrote: ‘I appreciated Michael’s emphasis on EXCELLENCE, and have learned so much from him. Very sorry to hear this! Michael’s contribution to photography and the photographic community was huge!’
Another fan, Chris Nicholson, said: ‘Michael, you barely knew me, but you influenced my photography education and development greatly. Thank you for all your contributions to our world.’
Donations in Michael’s memory can be made to Luminous-Endowment, which Michael set up to help photographers with their projects and further their passion.

Kevin Raber added: ‘Chris [Sanderson] and I are committed to keeping Luminous-Landscape moving forward as a resource for photographers, as well as to growing the Endowment. Our passion for what we do is now stronger than ever.
‘Our promise to Michael was to make sure his legacy lived on.’
The Luminous-Landscape offices are based in Indianapolis.
