Page 1: Carla Bruni battles Monroe

A photograph of a nude Carla Bruni will pitch up against portraits of Marilyn Monroe at an auction in Germany on Thursday.

The 1994 photo – entitled ‘Carla Bruni in Bed’ by photographer Pamela Hanson – is being sold as a gelatin silver print.

It is expected to raise up to ?3,500 (around £3,000), as part of an auction of modern and contemporary photographs at the Villa Grisebach Auction in Berlin on 4 June.

This is not the first time a naked photograph of the French President’s wife has attracted worldwide media attention.

Last year a widely published photograph of Nicolas Sarkozy’s other half went under the hammer at Christie’s in New York.

However, this time the Bruni picture will do battle with an early print of the famous 1953 portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Alfred Eisenstaedt which could bow out for as much as ?10,000, say auctioneers.

Also up for grabs is a photo of Monroe captured by André de Dienes at Tobey Beach, Long Island in 1949 (estimated ?1,500-2,500).
