Panasonic’s latest L-mount lens is a compact, lightweight and affordable prime that’s designed to be a good match to its S9 camera. The Panasonic Lumix S 40mm F2 aims to deliver “natural-looking images with beautiful bokeh” and should be suitable for a wide range of subjects, including such things as street photography and environmental portraits.

At 40.9mm long and just 140g in weight, the 40mm becomes Panasonic’s most portable full-frame lens to date. It’s similar in size to the firm’s 18-40mm kit zoom, and employs the same 62mm filter thread, but is lighter in weight. Despite the petite dimensions, there’s still space on the barrel for a function button and AF/MF switch.
The lens also boasts dust and splash-proof construction, with a fluorine coating on the front element to help keep it clean. Focus breathing is suppressed and micro-step aperture control is on board, which should make it attractive to videographers, too.
The Panasonic Lumix S 40mm F2 is set to go on sale in May in a choice of black or silver finishes for £349.
Black Titanium Lumix S9
Panasonic has also also unveiled a new colour variant of its Lumix S9 camera, this time in ‘Black Titanium’. Unlike last year’s Titanium Gold version, it won’t be a limited addition. Instead, the firm says it will be available via retailers and Panasonic Direct from the beginning of May, priced at £1299 in a kit with the 18-40mm zoom lens.
Updated Lumix S lens roadmap
Last but not least, Panasonic has updated its lens roadmap, adding two upcoming optics. First is a wideangle prime that’s slated to be much the same size as the 40mm f/2 – so presumably something along the lines of a 20mm f/2.8. There’s also a planned large-aperture telephoto zoom, to complement last year’s 24-60mm f/2.8. As always, we’ll report full details when they become available.

With an overall length of approximately 40.9mm and a weight of approximately 144g, it pairs perfectly with the compact body of the LUMIX S9, creating a lightweight, portable setup that’s easy to carry. The lens shares a similar profile with the LUMIX S 18-40mm F4.5-6.3 when collapsed and also maintains the same 62mm filter diameter.
While remaining compact and lightweight, the lens features a dust- and splash-resistant design for reliability in changing weather conditions. The front lens element is coated with fluorine, making it easy to remove dirt and oil from the surface.
To meet the growing demand for video production, the lens also incorporates features such as focus breathing suppression and micro-step aperture control, enabling smooth exposure transitions and high-quality video expression.
Alongside this announcement, Panasonic is also sharing its lens development roadmap (see enclosed), featuring a wide-angle prime lens designed to complement the compact LUMIX S9 body, and a large-aperture telephoto zoom lens to further expand the L-Mount lens lineup.
