In 35mm equivalent terms, the lens offers a zoom range of 24mm to 84mm. Consisting of 17 elements in 12 groups, the lens’ design is claimed to offer best-in-class image quality thanks to three aspherical elements and three ED glass elements.
It also boasts Fujifilm’s High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating (HT-EBC) across its entire surface, which controls ghosting and flare. This is further augmented by new Nano-GI (Gradient Index) technology, which inhibits flare and ghosting by introducing nano-sized irregularities on the lens surface.
The lens is weather-sealed at 14 locations, and Fujifilm claims it is weather-resistant, dust-resistant, and able to operate in temperatures as low as -10°C. The firm recommends the lens as a partner for the X-T1, which is weather-sealed to the same extent.
Indeed, when paired with a Fujifilm X-T1 or an X-E2, the XF 16-55mm lens is able to benefit from Fujifilm’s Lens Modulation Optimiser (LMO) technology, which corrects for diffraction to improve edge-to-edge sharpness.
The lens features nine rounded aperture blades for smooth bokeh, and despite its metal build it is reasonably light. Fujifilm says that the Fujinon XF 16-55mm paired with a compatible body should be around 60% lighter than a full-size system.
Fujifilm claims an AF speed of 0.06 seconds when the lens is paired with an X-series camera, thanks to the Twin Linear Motor which also keeps the AF quiet.
The Fujinon XF 16-55mm lens will be available in the UK from February, with a suggested price of £899.99.
