Alex Webb’s Photo London exhibition will feature selected images of the photographer’s colour work from 1979-2010 – taken with Leica M cameras – alongside pictures shot in Cuba and photos captured in Mexico over more than 30 years.
Webb, who joined the famed agency Magnum Photos 40 years ago, said: ‘This work comes out of the singular obsession that I have had in my photographic life – working in intense vibrant colour, largely in the tropics.’
Webb worked in the south of the US in the mid-1970s, where he documented small-town life in monochrome and began to explore Haiti and the US/Mexico border area.
He first developed an interest in photography at high school.

A spokesperson for Leica, which is an official partner of Photo London, said: ‘As he worked more in the Caribbean and Mexico – places where, as he has said, vibrant colour seems almost embedded in the cultures – his response was to start photographing in colour, which he has continued to this day.’
Webb has published 14 books and exhibited at museums and galleries worldwide.
His work has appeared in many international publications, including National Geographic.
The exhibition, entitled ‘Alex Webb: Selections’, will take place in the Navy Board Room at Somerset House, which plays to host Photo London from 19-22 May.
The photographer will be taking part in book signings at the event on 21 and 22 May.
